PBS PRESENTS | FINDING YOUR ROOTS

Premiering Sunday Night on PBS is FINDING YOUR ROOTS with Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr. at 8pm est.  My DVR is set because so much will be going on with me taking care of deadlines if I can’t sit down to soak it all in, then I will have the opportunity to do so later that night.  Dr. Gates is no stranger to finding ancestral lines for people from all walks of life and himself.  More people are taking the journey to finding their ancestors and that is a beautiful thing.

It really is a spiritual journey- Treasure Hunting is the name I use often when you speak to people/families going through the journey. Findings may be joyous, bittersweet, complete, incomplete but the journey is well worth the moments of your life finding more about your life.  Finding Their Roots on PBS, other shows like Who Do You Think You Are on NBC have also taken the direction Gates has been on before by finding celebrity persons ancestral lines. Notably along with Dr. Gates, Who Do You Think You Are there is the the man, a legend in his own right Alex Haley.  Alex Haley best known author of the book Roots The Saga Of An American Family and creator inspiration of the iconic mini-series that aired on CBS Roots reaching 130 million viewers.  PBS Finding Your Roots will be no exception – a view well worth tuning into.

BEBE’S JOURNEY, THE TREASURE HUNT

LOCK IN WITH ME FOR MY ONLINE TALK RADIO SHOW  The GoldVault Talk Show With Bebe Davis on April 1st as I share my Ancestral Journey recently taken with my Mother from March 13-17.  Together we found so much information on our own – no middle person or guide journeying step by step with us.  My background is extensive research and my mother a retired educator is excellent about solving mysteries.  With our strengths, many moments we felt ‘Ancestor’s Help’  urging us to keep going when we came to various stopping points, additional wealth of information  we received from decades of conversation, dates of birth and death records in the family bibles and more what we found just on my grandfather’s side of the family was amazing.

With a unique last name, no name changes, no adoptions my mother and I found SIX for me FIVE for my mother- Generations of Grandfather’s. Our findings also showed mulatto lines, native american lines, dominance of males siblings which in a positive way continued the last name.  We also found interesting occupations, more than not they could read and write, real estate owners as early as the late 1700′s ( 1790  b ), several twins were found in the generations some we knew others not, interesting names such as ‘Sweet/Sweetist’ and ‘Lemon’, a ‘Booker’ T was found, ‘Delia’ ‘Marstella’,  many mysteries solved, some not, some yet to be revealed, some scandals for their time, the viewing of Slave Schedules, Free Inhabitants Schedules truly, truly, truly it was a complete pleasure and honor to truly know those who have come before. Saying their names, the names of their children that hasn’t been spoken in decades after decades – truly a moving experience. The icing on the paternal side of my mother’s family showed the specific place this lineage of the family came from… The Ivory Coast of Africa now known as  Cote-d’Ivoire.  This definitely causes for a upcoming overseas trip along with putting my DNA in the genealogy database for further confirmations.

The Treasure Hunt continues for me, my mother. I am sure more of my family when they each receive this Treasure Hunt that will be presented in a very detailed way for their own personal record they can pass down to their respective generation may want to join in on the journey.  My mother and I have yet to research the lines of the wives our Grandmother’s of Greatness on this paternal side sans my grandfather/grandmother.  The Generational  Grandmothers which will be six times removed from me pretty excited to find what I can about them on deep levels.  Often the wives they are overlooked after taking on their husbands name but I feel it is equally important to research them.

I find it respectful to find out the wives families side if  the information is available.  We have a few more mysteries to unlock on my grandfather’s father’s family.  From there my mother and I start researching my grandfather’s mother’s family.  After my grandfather’s family is researched,  the journey will begin on my grandmother’s family then I am on more.   Nothing like a good journey that takes you out of the comfort zone into the unknown. I look forward to sharing my journey so far hoping it will inspire others to  do the same.

Documentary Time | MONICA AND DAVID

MONICA & DAVID… And HBO Documentary Film really touched me on many levels.  I viewed the DOCU about a month ago. With my busy life, I am now able to put into words my thoughts here at deja vu u a.d. blog.  Indeed this is a LOVE STORY.  For me it is a story of romantic love, selfless love, compassionate love, humanitarian love, a parents unconditional love.  Here is the SYNOPSIS .

It is safe to say relationships have ‘Challenges’.  What really struck a heart of hearts chord with me was the parents of both Monica and David.  They were able to openly discuss their fears regarding their children and give them the freedom to live a productive enough life in a world whereas others like them with down syndrome don’t have the chance to do so.  It is a real eye opener for people to see the range of someone with down syndrome and the one track minded stereotypes that are brought upon those with physical/mental/social challenges.  We all can be a piece of work whether we choose to believe it or not, even those of us who feel assuredly we are SANE.

The interaction between the two were beautiful showing the love, the jealousy, figuring it out as they go along… the makings of many relationships without the other challenges they face.  I found the documentary endearing, showing a clearer point of view of the many advances that have been made by those with special needs who when given the chance can thrive in this world.  If you get a chance, make sure you check out the documentary on HBO.

Quote by Herman Melville

“Who in the rainbow can draw a line where the violet tint ends and the orange tint begins?  Distinctly we see the difference of the colors, but where exactly does the first blendingly enter into the other?  So with sanity and insanity.”

DEJA DOCU MOMENT: Adrian Grenier Paparazzi Documentary

Actor Adrian Grenier, Directs/Produces/Appears in ’Teenage Paparazzo’  now showing on HBO Documentary Films.  The film debuted September 27th.  Grenier who stars in the popular HBO Original Series Show ENTOURAGE flips the script on the paparazzi in order to gain clearer perspective of the whole Celeb/Paparazzo love/hate/stalker/misunderstood relationships.

So who is the teenage paparazzo? It is 14-year-old paparazzo Austin Visschedyk.  Visschedyk born into the Hollywood Frenzy  has photographed many celebs. His parents gave the green light on his choice of  ‘hangout time’ and Grenier get’s Up Close And Personal Moments.  Visschedyk seems like a focused kid who has found his current niche, making a name for himself and increasing his cache.

I definitely loved the appearances by some of the cast of Entourage, Eva Longoria, Alec Baldwin, Perez Hilton, Paris Hilton, Whoopi Goldberg,  academics, press and psychologists and more.  Adrian Grenier is such a dream IMO  ( In My Opinion ) and this documentary puts him in such another dimension.  As part of the media reporting industry through this blog, 1021Online.com, my online talk show The GoldVault1021 Talk Show, and my weekly entertainment report Lolita’s Bliss Entertainment Report – it is always a refreshing reality moment to check oneself on how responsible you are in reporting/covering celebs and the latest in their lives.

Teenage Paparazzo is a SCORE  Documentary from Grenier and Company.  Once again, it’s another good viewing from HBO.  Make sure you check it out.

DOC REVIEW: BET My Mic Sounds Nice

 SCORE

The BET Documentary aired August 30

http://dai.ly/a9FnAG

Truly this is a conversation piece that is needed for those in tune and not in tune with their Hip Hop History where women are concerned.  For me everyone showcased, ever single person I witnessed the moments as they happened.  For me it was a feel good moment.  It was an each on teach one moment, kudos for this one BET.  You can tell when someone has respect for the entire Hip Hop Movement through their writings as a blogger, contributor, freelance etc. because they know the history.   They don’t talk ‘slick’  of the ‘paved the way ones’ because of their love for a newbie rap artist on the block.  There is nothing wrong with each generation having their favorite rapper, that is the beauty of  Hip Hop. What is wrong -when you don’t know your history.

Knowledge is power when you are in this business of the written word to the public, journalist or no- be about it.  The history is out there for you whether you lived in the moment or not.  I try to be well versed on a broad subject matter because I seek the knowledge of times before my time.  I like to be thorough and that thoroughness has taken me far.  Knowledge is power.

What makes me ILL ( yea you know I reached back for that Ill ) are those who be ILLING not  being their own definitive person in the rap game as a female, male whatev’s.  Back in the day there were so many female emcees like BET Documentary touched on -each one had their own definitive voice.  You didn’t have those arguments about people sounding alike or biting someone’s style because these females were on their positive ‘cocky’ – Thank God For It.  What I feel is wrong with some of this generation is that Hip Hop was a movement that had it’s big shares of struggles.  The culture, the movement was dismissed by parents and grandparents, the media as a ‘fad’.   Then you had the various forms of censorship for more provacative rap lyrics,  government, politicians began getting in the mix labeling artist dangerous, putting groups on watch listings  and so much more.

Like any movement/culture you have non-clarity at times.  What outweighs what many feel is a loss of clarity for Hip Hop Culture today is the LOVE.  I am feeling a Tribe Called Quest Moment L-O-V-E but I am kicking this one for me and my ladies ( a play off Lyte’s dj ).  There is so much love from those of us who were there in the beginnings.  When I hear some of the generations of today saying ’go sit down’, ‘you too old’, ‘your time is up’ - you have to give respect where respect is due. In Hip Hop Culture there is no such thing as 1, 2, 3, 4 Yo Time Is Up ( I am straight punning on this one -remember Jade ?).

I remember getting an autograph and talking with Yo Yo in Charlotte NC at Simmons Soul Food Restaurant in Charlotte in the 90′s.  She was so cool.  I remember meeting TLC when they first came out .  They were doing a promotional tour and stopped by my University in Charlotte JCSU.   That was a moment because we all were around the same age, Left Eye was in her baggy gear with the condom over the eye, all so down -good times.  I remember dyeing my hair auburn with Dark n Lovely ,  just like MC Lyte for my Graduation Pictures.  I was already rocking the look by my sophomore year. Everytime people see my Grad Pictures from high school they say, oh yea you had that ‘Lyte Look’ ( laughing ).

YOUNG GENERATION

We are your pioneers official ages  49-37 give 36. I give those ages because I was 8 years old when the Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rappers Delight’ came out and my youngest uncle ten years older than me was a senior in High School.  If you are 36 you were 5 when it all started so I give you the IN ( lol ).  The pioneers include those who became emcees, doing the movies based around the HHC, those of us who saved our allowances to buy the records, go to the Hip Hop Inspired movies, watching ‘Yo MTV Raps’, BET, making our way to the concerts,  saving money or asking for money to stay in the latest colored lee jeans, jordache, gloria vanderbilts, calvin kleins, sergio’s,  namebelts, double knuckle rings, earrings with our names on it, necklaces with our names on it,  getting permission or sneaking to get our hair done like Lyte, Salt n Pepper, Yo Yo, happy to get those addidas, k-swiss, filas, pumas etc.   We wouldn’t listen to our parents or grandparents saying ‘cut that noise off and go to bed’,  we bought the eight track, the records, cassette, and cd’s.  Yea, your pioneers who embrace the new who are doing it from a perspective whereas it enhances.  It’s boring seeing someone bite a style, as the saying goes from back in the day, it’s wackety wack wack.

Jean Grae is nice with hers, and I love the energy of thought when it comes to her and others in the more underground setting.  She could easily go commercial especially with this video I am gonna show but it’s not all about the commercialism when you aren’t true with your craft.  When you look at the longevity and respect being a pure caricature in Hip Hop doesn’t mean much when your bars don’t penetrate deeper than the moment of things.

Um did anyone else catch her asian flair from 2008?

Where have we seen that lately?

I love her concept from TAXI DRIVER

70′s Movies Starring Robert Deniro and Jodie Foster

Look closely at the end of video….

Knowledge Is Power People

One Love To : Monie Luv, Antoinette, Mia X, Sparky D, Finesse and Synquis, Bahamadia, Mystic, Sole, Vita, Deadly Venoms and more who are so unsung.  The power can be brought back when there can be consistency in the chosen path no matter how much success comes.  It is very easy to get thrown off track but I do believe Women In Hip Hop can still flourish and more on the roster at the same time. That is what I look forward to seeing.

Missy, Lyte definitely made some strong points on the emotional levels of women, the ‘male dominating factor’, the message being put out there regarding women, truly this conversation could keep going and peel back so much crusty layers that have yet to be uncovered.

It was so good seeing this documentary cover so much and still yet there is so much more to cover.   I would love for someone to put Antoinette in the mix and give her the props.  She was one of the first rappers when I was about 11 or 12 that had the censorship on the cassette.  She could hit the bars like Lyte and Roxanne Shante.  Lyte’s swagg was so smooth on this documentary -  that is my girl.  One love to B Angie B – Angie Stone.  She represented South Carolina on the real my maternal families state and yes Carolina South was very proud for the ‘FUNK YOU RIGHT ON UP’.  I feel pretty good about the future of Hip Hop when it comes to women.  Young ladies out here are hungry to be heard and promoting diversity, is what will expand the playing field.  Yes I am one of those pioneers of Hip Hop Culture who would like to see a plethroa of women on the scene making it happen.  Again, Kudos to BET, let’s the conversation continue to happen.  SCORE.

DOCUMENTARY: John Cazale In The Round

HBO Documentary:  I Knew It Was You:

Rediscovering John Cazale

John Cazale  1935- 1978  a short life for some, dead from Lung Cancer, 42.

I find it refreshing as a summer’s day sitting in the grass looking up at the moving clouds ( Southern Girl Here ) for actor’s coming together in celebrating John Cazale.  Just like in the documentary many don’t know the name but the face as movie fanatics they recognize the character he played in The Godfather, Fredo Corleone.

The documentary showed the respect of many great actors for Cazale.  The man who perfected vulnerability, evoked compassion and had people cheer for the ‘underdog’, that was Cazale.  He had perfect timing, and the director’s and producer’s who utilized the talent, I say BRAVO.

The documenatry had my attention from the first rolling takes.  I even took another look at how I viewed his performance.  The beauty in it all with such a small body of work in his time, simply breathless.  I found it wonderful how his ‘Roses’ ‘Cigars’ were given.  The body of work is what’s important, that quality factor not quantity factor.  John Cazale scored -reality.

John Cazale, Godfather I, II

Dog Day Afternoon, Cazle And Pacino Together Again

Cazale, Walker, DeNiro

Lovers, Cazale and Streep, Dame Meryl Streep

It is a well done documentary.  Check it out showing on HBO now.

Years Of The Women: Directors

YA DONE GOOD GIRL!

Kathryn Bigelow, First Woman To Win Grammy For Director

There are so many  Women In Film as far as Director’s Go! Salute to all of them listed here and those not listed here in pictorial format.  I would be amiss if I were not to give Barbra Streisand KUDOS  for Yentl.   The film Yentl was groundbreaking on many accounts.   It is a DARE TO DREAM film, with so much character in the soundtrack, storyline, location, characters and more.   Streisand really deserved more kudos for Yentl.  It is one of my favorite films on so many levels.

Enjoy the view here, it is quite charming and full of WOMAN POWER.
