I am at that point where I can say I’ved lived three decades. Might not be much to other people but it speaks volumes to me. I hate halves so I could say three and a half decades but I will wait for the whole. In these times, I have witnessed not read about but witnessed some great moments in music. I love second chances which aren’t literal second chances but in reality the follow through from whence one has come is beautiful.
El Debarge is having one of those ‘chance moments’. Fresh off of his welcome back at The 2010 BET Awards, other major performances we have a solid album ladies and gentlemen who are fans of his work. The latest single is ‘Second Chances’. El’s voice is timeless, held up better than any FAN could have expected when the added components of a troubled life is mixed in.
During the BET Awards El Debarge literally had the audience grooving to what are now classic songs. For those who weren’t familiar with El’s work ( bless the hearts ), it was clear here was a guy hitting the high notes without cracks. Yes even the cracks had to bow… SLAYED they were. I along with many others have their favorites from El Debarge as a solo artist and as part of the group DEBARGE.

To have El still capture the pure essence of this song, the stylings, near perfect pitched vocals, it is a treasure. The description of this recent tragedy sounds eerily familiar to the 1994 Susan Smith Story. Two young boys losing their lives in South Carolina. Dead from a drowning, found still strapped in their seats. The mother as of 8/16/10 is being held in custody. No formal charges have been brought against the mother. What is fact, two young babies are dead. Tonight many mourn the recent tragedy in Orangeburg SC.
As a South Carolina Native on my maternal side of the family, the current report brings back many memories of a very sad state of affairs that happened whereas the horrific events became a national story. While the events seem similar, it is important to say all of the facts/info surrounding this event has not been collected for a guilty charge.
Again no murder charges have been brought forth on anyone. This case is under investigation no matter how passionate many feel to already be judge and jury. I feel very confident given the nature of this case, the South Carolina Authorities will do everything possible to bring about a fair and balance outcome for justice and respect of these two children’s lives.
This post will be updated once more details are given.

Mother Shequan Duley has been formally charged with murder of her sons 8/16/10. A press conference was held today on the death of eighteenth month Ja’van Duley and two year old Devean Duley. According to Sheriff Larry Williams ( Orangeburg ) Duley confessed to suffocating her children at a hotel she checked into, then placed them in the car, which rolled down the Edisto River.
What do we know about Shaquan Duley?
Duley is an unemployed mother of three. Obviously there were some deep issues happening with her. It is very obvious she felt no other option was available. Selfish? Troubled? Where is the father? Did Shaquan tell anyone about her intentions? Were there signs this tragedy was going to happen? Is this a snapped/psychotic episode?
These questions and more are what many people are asking.
There is one surviving child age five who is currently with the grandmother.
PRESS CONFERENCE
Duley states she had an argument with her mother. According to reports her mother had a firm hand, stating ( unquote ) Shaquan needed to be responsible in her role as a mother. According to reports at the press conference this may have been a snapped situation ( end unquote ).
MEDIA RESPONSIBILTIY
We do not have all the facts. They have not been presented to us. The Investigator’s don’t have all the facts. Confessions aren’t always what they seem. There is always the thought, there is more to the story being told. This could possibly be a convenient confession. Could there have been an accomplice? Is this the real motive? Were the children still alive then rolled in the river? The autopsy being performed will conclude if the children were alive or not. There is no mental evaluation on Ms. Duley and the father hasn’t come forward. Being unemployed doesn’t mean you aren’t getting assistance from the government. Bottom line we don’t have all the facts.
Many media reports online and offline have begun to trivilize the motive. Sheriff Larry Williams did clear up the statement, “I WANTED TO BE FREE” as HIS INTERPRETATION NOT SHEQUAN’S STATEMENT. For those interested, concerned, please be aware of some media feeds who only want to sensationalize the situation. There is a surviving family of the victims and the charged. As with any investigation, this case will be thoroughly investigated to bring more clearer facts to the family first and foremost then to the public.
UPDATE
Autopsy reports shows suffocation did take place before the boys were placed in the car and taken to their drowing in The Edisto River. The family has made statements that the mother ( unquote ) isn’t a monster and they are wanting privacy during these trying times. (end unquote )
